A private wine day should leave time to enjoy each stop and still get home when you expect. For a pickup in Walnut Creek or Concord, start with the full journey: your front door, the first winery, lunch, any later appointments and the return home. Six hours in Napa is a different itinerary from a six-hour reservation that starts in the East Bay.

Choose the wineries before choosing the number of hours

Write down the exact address, appointment time and expected duration of each tasting. A downtown Napa tasting room and an estate farther up the valley are different scheduling choices. Group nearby stops together and avoid crossing the valley repeatedly just to fit in another name.

Visit Napa Valley recommends two or three winery visits in a day and notes that many experiences take at least 90 minutes. For a day that also includes the drive from the East Bay, two well-spaced appointments are a useful starting point. Confirm the actual duration with each winery before reserving transportation.

When a six-hour private wine day can work

Consider six hours for a compact itinerary: one unhurried winery visit and lunch, or shorter confirmed tastings at nearby properties when the travel time allows. A six-hour reservation is less forgiving if your pickup is far from the first stop, lunch runs long or you choose a winery farther north.

Illustrative six-hour time budget: 90 minutes for the outbound journey, 90 minutes at a winery, 60 minutes for lunch, 30 minutes for local movements and schedule flexibility, and 90 minutes for the return. This is a planning example, not a prediction of travel time or a promise that a particular itinerary will fit.

If the route estimate for your date needs more travel time, shorten the activities or reserve more hours. Do not assume a second full tasting will fit into the remaining gaps.

Why eight hours gives an East Bay group more room

Eight hours is a useful starting point for two substantial tasting appointments and lunch. The additional time can cover the journey, winery check-in, the walk back to the vehicle and a meal without scheduling every minute. A longer tour, a distant winery or several pickup addresses may still require a longer reservation.

Starting at a Napa hotel changes the calculation. With less time spent reaching the valley, the same reserved hours may allow a different itinerary. Always include your real starting address when comparing options.

What to reserve separately

Your chauffeur reservation covers transportation under the terms shown for your trip. Winery admission, tasting fees, food pairings and restaurant meals are separate. Booking a car does not secure a winery appointment.

• Confirm each winery's availability, visit length and cancellation conditions.
• Tell the winery the full group size, including anyone who will not be tasting.
• Check guest, age and accessibility policies directly with the venue when relevant.
• Reserve lunch and leave enough time to get there from the preceding stop.

Choose the vehicle for the whole day
